Dance of Shizuka, Postcard (#11) belongs to Postcards. Picture postcards became a major modern medium in Japan around the turn of the twentieth century. They joined inexpensive color reproduction, postal communication, tourism, commemoration, and collecting, carrying artists’ designs to audiences beyond the conventional print market.
Shizuka Gozen was the celebrated dancer and companion of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Her dances before shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo became enduring subjects of medieval legend, Noh, kabuki, and prints. The catalog identifies women as the principal motif. Gekkō uses it to clarify action, season, setting, or narrative emphasis rather than as interchangeable decoration.
Gekkō’s print style is noted for painterly contours, soft color transitions, and reserved paper, effects achieved through the collaborative disciplines of block carving and hand printing.
