This prize-winning painting was exhibited at the Second Competitive Exhibition (1897) of the Japan Painting Association. This image is in black and white because it was taken from an announcement of the prize in the Magazine of Japanese Arts Volume IV number 10, March 1898. The location of the actual painting is presently unknown. The magazine reads, "This is a classical depiction of Minamoto Yoshiie (1041-1108) riding off into the battle of Gan. Yoshiie is revered to this day as a warrior who was the absolute embodiment of the samurai spirit. He participated in numerous battles during the Heian period, leading the Minamoto family into a position of great strength and respect." Yoshi-iye is thought of today as the greatest example of what a samurai should be.
