Tokiwa Gozen

51.75 x 19.5 inches, 131.5 x 49.5 cm

The subject of this work is the tale of Tokiwa Gozen, the mother of Yoshitsune. In the 12th Century, upon the death of her husband, Minamoto no Yoritomo, she was forced to flee in the midst of winter, taking her three sons with her. This composition shows Tokiwa in the snow, two children huddled under her clothes, the third child at her breast.
