KUCHI-E, FRONTISPIECES
(See also Hansei Zasshi under Periodicals & Books for another class of kuchi-e not pictured here.)

Kuchi-e were popular frontispiece illustrations for novels or magazines from around 1895 to 1915, most notably Bungei Kurabu, the Literary Club magazine. They were usually folded twice and inserted in books and magazines, and were generally about 9 x 12 inches (23 x 30.5 cm). Kuchi-e were hand-made in traditional woodblock technique.
